Restricted Electrical Licence Course
Course Overview
Designed specifically for professionals in non-electrical trades, the Restricted Electrical License Course empowers you to safely perform minor electrical tasks that typically require a licensed electrician. Whether you work as a plumber, gas fitter, instrumentation technician, or in another related trade, this course provides the essential training to carry out specific electrical installation work with confidence and compliance.
With a Restricted Electrical Worker’s Licence, you’ll be authorized to handle tasks such as disconnecting and reconnecting equipment like electrical appliances, water heaters, motors, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, control systems, and more. This licence opens doors for tradespeople across a wide range of industries, enabling you to expand your skill set and increase your value on the job.
There are four categories of restricted electrical licence:
1. Electronics and communications equipment
2. Plumbing, or plumbing and gas fitting appliances
3. Motors and/or composite equipment
4. Domestic electrical appliances

Certification & assessment fee: $100 (GST Exempt) NOTE: After completing on-the-job training, learners must return to us to complete a one-hour Verification of Competency session, which is a mandatory step to obtain the Restricted Electrical Licence. This fee covers this session. |

Restricted Electrical Licence for Domestic Electrical Appliances
Scope of Work
1. Disconnect and reconnect fixed wired domestic cooking appliances up to 240V.
2. Replace the electrical units of defective electrical components confined within cooking appliances on a like-for-like basis.
3. Ensure the equipment is safe for operation.

Restricted Electrical Worker’s Licence for Electronics and Communication Equipment
Scope of Work
1. Disconnect and reconnect electronic and communication equipment.
2. Replace the unit or defective electrical components within electronic and communication equipment.
3. Ensure the equipment is safe for operation.
Electronic and Communication means the following equipment operating above extra low voltage:
• Electronic devices that are components of an audio, video, TV, computer or communication network.
• CCTV systems.
• Laboratory and scientific equipment.
Restricted Electrical Licence for Plumbing and/or Gasfitting Appliances
Scope of Work
- Disconnect and reconnect fixed wired appliances in accordance with the approved work area category up to 1000V.
- Replace the unit or defective electrical components confined within appliances in accordance with the approved work area category on a like-for-like basis.
- Locate and rectify faults in appliances in accordance with the approved work area category.
- Ensure the equipment is safe for operation.

11. Cooking, lighting or heating appliances that use LPG and are designed for outdoor use
12. Commercial catering equipment — salamanders and grillers
13. Commercial catering equipment — solid griller plates, griddles
14. Commercial catering equipment — barbecue grillers

Restricted Electrical Worker’s Licence for Composite Equipment and/or Motors
Motors – Scope of Work
1. Disconnect and reconnect fixed wired motors up to 1000V, and replacement of defective components within the motor on a like-for-like basis.
2. Ensure the equipment is safe for operation.
Composite Equipment – Scope of Work
1. Disconnect and reconnect fixed wired composite equipment up to 1000V, and replacement of defective components confined within the equipment on a like-for-like basis.
2. Ensure the equipment is safe for operation.

Entry Requirements
Individuals seeking a Restricted Electrical Licence must first contact Building and Energy before enrolling in the course to confirm and receive approval for their licence application and training requirements. Further information can be found here or search the wa.gov.au website for Restricted electrical workers licence – Training record and logbook – Application. Note that as of 4/12/2024 new restricted electrical licence applicants (not renewals) have to provide an Australian police check with their application to Building & Energy.
A copy of your approval letter from Building and Energy must be provided at the time of registration or enrolment.
Once all required work experience has been completed and verified by the designated supervisor, learners will need to enrol in and successfully complete a Verification of Competency assessment with us. Please note that an additional fee applies for this assessment.
